I just got an alesis USB MIDI Cable for my LK-110 casio keyboard and when I try to use it in garageband, garageband knows there is a keyboard connected but it doesnt play any sound. GarageBand User Guide for iPad

Using the Audio Recorder, you can record your voice, an instrument, or any other sound using the microphone on your iPad, and play it back in GarageBand. You can also record sounds using an external microphone connected to your iPad.

The Audio Recorder has two sets of controls you can use to change the sound. Fun view lets you quickly change the sound of your recording, while Studio view gives you more options to enhance your recording.

Switch between Fun and Studio view

  • Tap the Fun or Studio button at the top of the Audio Recorder.

Record a sound

  1. Tap the Record button in the control bar.

  2. Play, sing, or make sound into the microphone.

  3. When you are finish, tap the Play button in the control bar to stop recording. Tap the Play button again to hear your recording.

Adjust the microphone input level

While you record, the In level slider on the left shows the input level from the microphone. If the level turns red, drag the slider down (or record the part again more softly) to prevent distortion.

  1. Drag the In level slider up or down to set the input level.

    The In level slider is available if your iPad or input source supports input level control.

  2. If the input device supports left and right channels, tap Channel button under the In level slider, tap Input 1 or Input 2 to select the input channel, or tap Stereo to record in stereo.

When an external microphone or other audio device (such as a headset or an audio interface) is connected to your iPad, the input level can be set automatically.

  • Tap the Input Settings button , then tap the Automatic switch.

Reduce unwanted noise

You can use a noise gate to reduce low-level input noise when you record. A noise gate cuts off the sound when it falls below a certain minimum level.

  1. Tap the Input Settings button , then turn Noise Gate on.

  2. Drag the Noise Gate slider until the noise stops or decreases to an acceptable level.

Turn on monitoring for an external microphone

When an external microphone or other audio device (such as a headset or an audio interface) is connected to your iPad, the Monitor button under the Out level slider becomes active.

  • Tap the Monitor button to turn monitoring on. Tap the button again to turn monitoring off.

The Audio Recorder includes presets that appear after you record a sound. Each preset adds an interesting character to the recorded sound.

  1. Do one of the following:

    • In Fun view, tap or turn the dial to select one of the presets.

    • In Studio view, tap the icon in the middle of the screen and choose a preset from the list.

  2. Turn the knobs to change the sound of the preset.

Midi To Garageband Ipad

Hello everyone,

I have iPhone 6s Plus and trying to find a way to convert audio to midi with Audiobus in Garageband.
I run iSymphonic orchestra in Garageband by using Audiobus and it makes audio records as well.. Is there any way to send midi signals inside Garageband by using Audiobus with a third party app?

  • You can't send MIDI out from Garage Band, but what you can do is use another MIDI app and send it's MIDI out to iSymphonic, and then record the audio in Garageband.

    Garageband has great limitations as an iOS DAW, which is puzzling after all this time. It's essentially an isolated dead end road, which is a shame because it could be really useful on iOS with just a few relatively minor additions.

    I use GarageBand to start stuff off. Often the idea is originated there. What I’ve given up trying to do is rescue any of it for further use. I use it to rough out the sketch, build a little maquette or prototype, practice the pacing of what needs to be where with placeholders. Then once it’s got something, even though by then it’s over into Logic Pro to look at and play with, I don’t attempt to use anything it made. I just start each piece all over again, manually, in a proper situation. It often doesn’t resemble what I sketched out, but it benefits from it.

    It remains one of the most accessible dumbed-down means of imitating music for the people.

  • GarageBand is my only DAW (at this point) and with Audiobus compatibility and its nifty UI I can't much see wanting to move to any of the others I've auditioned (that maybe an iPad screen could make better). There are a number of things I'd love to see added - MIDI/control changes (at least THEIR version of it) as an OUT app for AB, more instruments, more onboard control over recorded audio - but it gets me where I need to be.

  • You could try and run a Garageband track through MIDIMorphosis and send the midi to another app. May work.
    I use this kind of stuff with figure tracks and it works well, if the melody ain't full of FX and such

    Sampler which is inside GarageBand also helps for midi signals but sound quality is not good as much as audio recording..
